...and I have no idea why. I loved pretty much all other books by Tessa Bailey. This one made me skip pages and constantly check how much longer I had to torture myself with it for, because I couldn't see the end in sight. 30% into it and I got a little teary eyed because I couldn't believe that I was not even halfway through.

I had liked Bowen and Sera's story, and loved Connor as well while at it. I couldn't wait for him to get his HEA as well. Aaaand... I hated the girl he ended up with (boo, I know). I got that she had major issues, had gone through hell with her stepfather, and that her being a brat was a defense mechanism. But I couldn't stand it!!!! I just could not! And because of it, I was so very anxious to be done with the book and get it off my kindle, because I sure as hell would not read it again.

I did not understand at all how Erin (the girl in question) went from not being able to stand any other human touching her, let alone anything else, to not only going at it like crazy, but telling Connor that she loved him, all in the span of less than a week. I think she realized she was in love with him on day 2. And, of course, Connor loved her right back. And he became so understanding and protective of her by then, that it just made me scratch my head and wonder wtf am I missing??? And for the amount of time their story covered, they had so much sex, that I have no idea how in the world they ended up getting anything else accomplished.

Up in Smoke Crossing the Line Tessa Bailey 9781633750135 Books Reviews

The Crossing the Line Series, by Tessa Bailey, is my absolute favorite series of hers! There is something so intoxicating and intriguing about the characters in this series. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of her characters and I am one of her biggest fans, but this series is explosive, unique and captivating! If you have not started this series, I highly recommend that you start by reading Risking It All, which is Bowen (My book husband … lol!) and Sera’s (She’s awesome! I love her!!) story. You can easily read Up in Smoke as a standalone, but trust me when I say that you don’t want to miss my BoVinci and his ladybug in action! ;)

Up in Smoke picks up where Risking It All left off. Bowen, Sera and Connor travel to Chicago to work with 3 other very talented people. The talent I’m talking about is not dancing, drawing or singing … Nope! These people have a special talent that Captain Derek Tyler (Line of Duty Series, #1) needs to close the case that he’s been working on. Connor Bannon is not very happy with the idea of working with all these ex-cons. Sera and Bowen are the only two people Connor trusts, until Erin O’Dea walks into the meeting and turns his world upside down. Erin is used to playing with fire, but the fire that Connor ignites in her is too much for her to handle. As days go by, Connor and Erin work close together and their feelings for each other are starting to grow into something more. Will the convicted arsonist and ex-navy seal be able to play with fire without getting burned?

Gah!!!!

Be still my beating heart!!!! Connor Bannon is one hell of an alpha male!!! Tessa Bailey creates the most amazing characters and makes them come alive by writing the most incredible stories! Connor surprised me. When he was first introduced in Risking It All, I knew that he was special. He was sweet and respectful with Sera and he helped Bowen with whatever was going on with them at that moment. What surprised me the most about him was how he took care of Erin. He was amazingly patient with her. The attraction between these two was incredibly hot and sexy! From the first moment they met, they got under each other’s skin. They worked together towards one goal and ended up getting more than what they had signed up for. They found each other. They are one hot couple! Each touch, kiss, sensual and steamy moment was intense. Make sure you have a couple of hours to read this book because you won’t be able to put it down!!! Erin and Connor will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end!

Can I just take a few minutes of your time to talk about Erin O’Dea? She is one intriguing heroine. I was really fascinated by her. Tessa Bailey did a fantastic job at writing both POV’s, but Erin’s POV totally left me breathless! Erin O’Dea needs a social media page so I can follow her exciting life!!! I’m her number one fan! She’s intense and she knows exactly what she wants! She's a breath of fresh air! Every reader has a place they call home. My home is wherever Tessa Bailey’s writing takes me. I highly recommend Up in Smoke and the Crossing the Line Series. You will not be disappointed!!

Disguised in Danger will be next in this series. This book will feature Polly and Austin, which were introduced in Up in Smoke. They worked well will all the other characters and I hope that in their book we will see more of the characters that I have come to love so much. Like always Tessa Bailey did a fantastic job at introducing us to her secondary characters, which are going to get their own book. She gives you just enough to make your want her next book ASAP.

I give Up in Smoke, by Tessa Bailey, 5 seductive, exciting, explosive, hot, steamy stars!
I love the premise of Up in Smoke and I'm a huge Tessa Bailey fan so the fact that I was just a bit disappointed in this book was surprising but true. Up in Smoke while the 2nd book in the series is actually the first one where the team of criminals is pulled together by the Chicago Police Department to catch criminals because who better than to catch criminals then a group of people who know exactly how they think. This book centers around two of those criminals - a girl who likes to play with fire and seems just a bit crazy and a guy with some serious anger management issues that was a former Navy Seal and enforcer for the mob.

The beginning of this book had me really excited. I loved the scene where Erin and Connor first meet. The chemistry jumps off the page and the characters were interesting and unique. In fact I loved the whole first half of this book and the character development. Erin was intriguing and complex and vulnerable especially when the reader was let in on her disability. Connor was obviously fighting his own demons and I loved the dichotomy of former Navy Seal and mob enforcer. These two characters seemed to have a lot of depth and I was looking so forward to see how they would handle the differences between them. Erin had special needs and would require a lot of patience and care and I was very interested to see Connor tackle those issues. The scenes were Erin realized she may not be able to give Connor what he needed/wanted were emotional and heartbreaking but so realistic.

And then it happened .... insta everything. Insta love and worse then that insta fix for a problem that Erin had been struggling with for years. In a matter of days she was cured because she "loved" Connor and felt safe. If this had taken place over a longer length of time I would have believed it and enjoyed it but it just felt rushed.

The sub plot was basically lost in the midst of an enormous amount of sex. Don't get me wrong I love Tessa's sex scenes and her dirty talking heroes but I don't want the story to get lost and to feel like I'm reading nothing but sex scene after sex scene which is how I felt about the second half of this book. I wanted this book to explore the emotional story of Erin's issues and how they could work around it and still find happiness instead of an unbelievable recovery.

So the first half of this book was a 5 star read but the second half was a 2 star for me. I don't doubt that I may be the minority in my rating for this book but I have high expectations for a Tessa Bailey book. She's one of my favorites when I'm looking for an entertaining, smoking hot, dirty talking hero and a good plot. This book had so much potential and the fact that IMO the author took the easy way out just left me feeling disappointed and a bit flat.

However, I'm still a fan and I'm looking forward to book #3 and the rest of this series.
