"Purity of Blood," the second "Captain Alatriste" novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte, is an excellent swashbuckling story with a great deal of action. Perez-Reverte is, as always, skillful in crafting an interesting story with strong scene setting, high adventure and solid characters. Perez-Reverte does an excellent job in trying to capture the flavor of Spain in the 1620s and his engaging narrator--an older man looking back at the adventures of his youth--helps propel this novel along.Tags : Purity of Blood (Captain Alatriste) [Arturo Perez-Reverte, Margaret Sayers Peden] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Gear up for swashbuckling adventure in the second “riveting”* historical thriller in the internationally acclaimed Captain Alatriste series. The fearless Alatriste is hired to infiltrate a convent and rescue a young girl forced to serve as a powerful priest’s concubine. Purity of Blood Captain Alatriste Arturo PerezReverte Margaret Sayers Peden 9780452287983 Books Reviews
Exactly what I needed. And on time!
I have read several of Perez Reverte's novels; they are well researched historically and well written. One can learn a great deal of Spanish history of
the 16th and 17th century by reading his novels. He also knows about the poets and authors of that time as well Cervantes, Gongora, Lope de Vega, Quevedo, etc.
An interesting story about medieval Spain and the Spanish Inquisition which involves Captain Alatriste trying to rescue a young woman from a convent only to have his attempt end distastrously with his ward Inigo falling into the clutches of the Inquisition.
Swashbuckling story steeped in 17th century Spain's Inquisition and a boy growing up under the tutelage of a swordsman for hire. Really good read. Better than the first in the series, Captain Alatriste (Purity of Blood is the second I think), which one should read regardless. Am looking forward to the next.
I love the Adventures of Capitan Alatriste. I have read those books, all of them about four times in the original language Spanish. I decided to buy them for my husband, who doesn't speak Spanish, so he can learn and understand why Mexicans are the way we are. Not only because the different ways, but also because what we have as a historical background.
By the way, this is the second book of the serie.
Purity of Blood, this second novel in a series of adventures starring Captain Alatriste and his young squire, Inigo, picks up shortly after the first novel leaves off. In this tale, the Captain is brought into a scheme to help a father rescue his daughter from a convent where she is being taken advantage of by an amorous priest. However, the rescue is a trap almost from the beginning and, though the Captain escapes, the father and one of his sons is killed, another son is wounded seriously, and Inigo & the daughter end up in the hands of the Inquisition.
The title of this novel comes from the fact that at this time in Spain it was crucially important to be of "old Christian blood." In particular, having a Jewish ancestor who converted was a risk, no matter how observant the family was at present or how much service they provided to the empire of Spain. As Inigo is forced through the machinations of the Inquisition, bloodlines are unwound and secrets are revealed, allowing Inigo to escape with his life, but just barely. No real surprise, since Inigo is our trusty narrator.
If this novel is slightly less pleasing than the first novel in the series, it is because there is much less action this time around. Better than half the novel takes place with the dungeons of the Inquisition as the primary focus, leaving the Captain with much less of an opportunity to wield his sword and dagger. Still, Perez-Reverte has a way of bringing Golden Age Spain to life, with it's adventure and hypocrisy, that always makes it worth the time to see what the Captain and Inigo are up to. It is sad that it will be nearly a year before the next novel will be published here.
While I enjoyed the book I didn't enjoy it as much as Captain Alatriste. The ending seemed a little abrupt as if Perez-Reverte had a page limit and had to get the story over with a little too soon.
Purity of Blood starts off in a thrilling fashion with Captain Alatriste hired to rescue a young woman from a corrupt convent in 17th century Spain. It goes along nicely for awhile but then begins to drag at the end. The ending is rather quick and not much of a payoff.
The historical fiction elements add some appeal but cannot overcome the ending. However, I am looking forward to future books as this is the second of a purported seven book series.
