A great read! Elani and Eddie are such strong characters. I was really holding my breath at times. A shocking, suspenseful, and imaginative story.Jessica Kristie shines a very personal and intimate light on the dark world of human trafficking. This is an important book, one that should be widely read (in schools!). This heinous, secret industry exists in every country of the world today.
Through the experience of a thirteen-year old girl, Elani Benjamin, the reader is given a first hand look at young kidnapped girls who live in prison-like conditions. Denied even a view of the outside world, they are robbed of hope, and forced to work hard with little to eat.
An unlikely hero, Eddie, steps out of the shadows, and over time, a secret, fragile bond develops between Elani and Eddie. Deftly written, with a heightened sense of tension and danger, Eddie plots a high-risk escape. Elani is sustained by a thin, golden thread of hope that one day she may again see the light of day again.

Thank you Jessica Kristie for writing this book! I love that you are bringing attention and help to the Victims of Human Slavery/Trafficking, this is such a terrible thing that is happening in our World.
Barbed-Wire Butterflies accomplishes the goal of guiding us to an awareness of the ugliness of human trafficking and does so tactfully. Jessica Kristie proves she is not only an accomplished poet, but a very engaging storyteller with a book that begs the turning of each page. What stirred me the most was the detailed picture of high risk kids, so that we as adults/parents can intervene to protect our children better from those who may perceive them as an easy target. The story unfolds with tragedy and despair, but strength, courage and hope triumph. This book should be required reading in schools at the appropriate age level and for every adult a "must read".
Human trafficking... something I did not even realize EXISTED in this "land of freedom"! And my ignorance and that of others is probably part of what makes human trafficking even possible. Hopefully, this book will succeed in raising public awareness.
The story, while fiction, is based on the sad reality that human trafficking DOES exist here in the USA. It's reasonably well-written, although the characters and plot are somewhat lightly developed. It's an easy read in that it only took part of one day to read the entire book. It's NOT an easy read in the disturbing elements, realizing that while Elani's story is fictitious, she is actually a montage of real-life stories of enslaved children. I feared sexual exploitation would be graphic, but was only alluded to.
Sadly, there are MANY evidences of poor proof-reading, which detracted significantly from enjoying the book and causing me to give it only four stars. Seriously, anyone capable of writing a novel should know the difference between "fowl" and "foul", "where" and "were" and similar properly spelled and improperly used words.
This story was compelling to me, maybe because the sickening problem of slavery has never ended. Even though we have laws against it, human trafficking still continues. Another reason is maybe because Jessica Kristie will be one of our presenters (and the one who will listen to pitches) at the Write to Inspire Conference in Sacramento on July 19 and 20.
Thirteen-year-old Elani Benjamin has been kidnapped by people looking for cheap labor. Hundreds of girls work in an ugly, concrete-walled building. They make clothing, electronic equipment, clean the place, and sleep in cells after their long days of work and little food. The guards could take their pick of the girls whenever they wanted. In other words, a living hell on earth.
Elani has no choice but to follow their orders, but exhaustion does not stop her from making friends with her three cell mates and one friendly janitor. They warn her not to make waves and above all not to make eye contact with the guards or the Captain. Especially not the Captain.
Horror stories circulate in whispers as the girls work and in their cells. Minor illnesses can become fatal. Small injuries must be avoided at all costs. Hurry to each assignment or else.
Hope is in short supply, but Elani must cling to the hope that one day she will be free, or she will lose her individuality and her soul the way so many around her have already done.
A great read! Elani and Eddie are such strong characters. I was really holding my breath at times. A shocking, suspenseful, and imaginative story.
