Social Creature A Novel Tara Isabella Burton Books
Well, it kept me interested enough to finish, but the last 30 pages or so were a slog because by then the book had crossed a line in absurdity. The concept is fantastic, if not original. The Talented Mr. Ripley in the age of social media. The writing style is much too self conscious, and the writer has a fascination with putting “so” before adverbs: “she exhales so slowly” “she tries, so vainly, to shush her” “she begins to sob, so brokenly”. It was either a tic or an affectation that drove me a little crazy as it was on nearly every page. However, you can tell the writer has talent and obvious intelligence. Her talent just needs to mature. In the meantime, this is a thriller that holds your interest for the first half. It could have worked all the way through for me if the character development had been better. I can stick with a story through outlandish plot twists if i believe in the characters. I didn’t believe in these characters.Tags : Amazon.com: Social Creature: A Novel (9780385543521): Tara Isabella Burton: Books,Tara Isabella Burton,Social Creature: A Novel,Doubleday,0385543522,Contemporary Women,Literary,Thrillers - Psychological,Compulsive behavior,Compulsive behavior;Fiction.,Envy,Envy;Fiction.,FICTION Contemporary Women,New York (N.Y.),Psychological fiction,Suspense fiction,Thrillers (Fiction),Women murderers,Young women,Young women;Fiction.,AMERICAN FIRST NOVELISTS,Computer Applications,FICTION Literary,FICTION Thrillers Psychological,FICTION Women,Fiction,Fiction-Coming of Age,Fiction-Psychological,FictionLiterary,FictionWomen,GENERAL,General Adult,Literary,MysterySuspense,New York,New York (N.Y.),POPULAR AMERICAN FICTION,Psychological fiction,Suspense fiction,Thrillers (Fiction),Thrillers - Psychological,United States,Women murderers,Young women,Young women;Fiction.,top book club books;social;fiction best sellers 2018;birthday gifts for women;books for women;beach reads;psychological thriller;beach read;book club recommendations 2018;beach reads 2018;party;suspense;women;New York;book club;social media;Facebook;parties;NYC;clothes;betrayal;thriller books;deception;lies;murder;literary;friendship;psychological;upper east side;New york novel;novel;Instagram;thriller;obsession;female friendship;Met Opera;new york city;gifts for writers;beach gifts for women, women; New York; book club; suspense; social media; Facebook; party; parties; NYC; clothes; betrayal; thriller books; deception; lies; murder; literary; friendship; psychological; upper east side; New york novel; novel; Instagram; thriller; obsession; female friendship; Met Opera; new york city; gifts for writers; books for women; beach reads; psychological thriller; beach read; book club recommendations 2018; beach reads 2018; birthday gifts for women; top book club books; social; fiction best sellers 2018; beach gifts for women,FICTION Literary,FICTION Thrillers Psychological,FICTION Women,FictionLiterary,FictionWomen,Fiction,MysterySuspense
Social Creature A Novel Tara Isabella Burton Books Reviews
This story made me want to to these things, in this order
1. Find a perfume shop that will mix me a custom perfume that smells like everything good in the world.
2. Delete all my social media accounts.
Ghosting. Literally. Writing not as rich as Tartt. Structure not as clever as Flynn. But it is an intriguing concept. Rich Manhattan millennial narcissists are easily duped by a social media-savvy psychopath. Besides the google trail she left, Louise was a determinedly clever fiend. Fun read with a plausibly modern twist.
I have no idea why anyone would even write this book. And the only reason I forced myself to read it was because it’s this month’s selection for my book club. I honestly have nothing good to say about this story. I can’t stand any of the characters (except Cordelia). I’d give it a minus 5 stars if that was a choice.
The plot was unbelievable. None of the characters were likable or believable. I don't know why I even finished reading it.
beginning of book you arent really sure where the book is going.
You are introduced to Louise and Lavinia and Lavinia's nutty lifestyle .
The second part of the book is unexpected. Couldnt put it down . Fatastic
I did not like anything about this book. I did not like the writing style at all (too cute and wry). I found the entire idea completely implausible - especially that she could succcessfully fool people that Louise sounded and looked like the murdered girl. Why did they become friends in the first place? Total waste of money. Not sure why it got good reviews. Nothing like the Talented Mr Ridley. No complexity or deceptions. Just a total bore from start to finish.
It starts out like one of those “New York” novels featuring the devil may care party girl and her cautious friend. Lavinia Willaims (the former) and Louise Wilson meet cute, go to a New Years Eve Party welcoming in 2015, and just when you think you know how this is going to go, the author throws a curve ball at the end of the first chapter.
Then the book goes playfully on, until the action promised at the end of the first chapter takes place, and then things go dark. And the book proceeds creepily till its unrelenting end a year later.
Since it’s almost impossible to say anything about the action that wouldn’t be a spoiler, I’ll turn to the prose flat and uninflected, is in the third-person present with “the fourth wall” removed. The narrator often intrudes making comments on the action. In fact I can almost see this as a stage production the actors on a bare stage with various scenes projected behind them--party scenes, New York streets, antique dresses, phone screens showing emoji-filled texts, and so on. The narrator would be at, say, stage right, beyond a lectern saying, for example, “Louise goes to a 24/7 Duane Reade near Bryant Park,” while on the screen is projected just that with the actress pantomining entry.
Its completely cynical and acid-drenched. The second send up of “How We Live Today in New York City” to appear this year. (The first, Caitlin Macy’s “Mrs.” is also worthy of your attention.) And, thankfully, it never wobbles.
NOTES AND ASIDES Murder 2 (twice), scatology, drugs, booze, sex, Hitchcockian identity exchanges. Yes, like Patricia Highsmith. No, not like Donna Tartt.
