This book is well thought out and the writing is very descriptive. Here are my pros and cons regarding The Eye of the Beholder:

PROS:
The dual perspective, I like going back and forth between the two main characters. Mira (Belle) is still a shining protagonist, but Lysander (the Beast) is developed into a complex character and the effort of his transformation is more apparent than in other renditions of Beauty and the Beast.

The character development. This isn't a story of the pure and guileless female enchanting and transforming the vile and selfish male. It's two people facing their own weaknesses and fears and growing both individually and collectively because of them. Their love is more real because their transformation is not dependent on each other. Rather, they assist each other through their individual transformations and learn to respect and love each other because of it.

CONS
There was a lot of hype in other reviews about a twist at the end. I didn't think there was any twist. Instead, there was a wrapping up of loose ends that isn't seen in any of the movies and free of the books. This made the book more complete, but I was anticipating a grand ending and didn't get it.

The book is fairly predictable. That's all right, this is a fairy tale retelling. While the characters in the book are unique, the story didn't vary at all from the basic outline. I don't mind a few variations now and again.

Overall, the book is enjoyable and a good, quick read. Worth reading at least once, and one that I might go back and read again some day.

The Eye of the Beholder Fairytale Collection book 1 eBook Nicole Ciacchella Reviews

Real star-count should be 4.5.*

Darcy transported me fully into Mirabelle's world as well as that of Edward-who-became-the-Beast. Readers see only what they see, know only what they know.

Their often contrasting views of the same scene give a fuller picture and leave opportunity to read between the lines. The pair's relationship develops naturally; the story unfolds like a blooming rose. Darcy doesn't resort to insta-love and doesn't hide the Beast's (or Mira's, for that matter) lesser attributes. But there's genuine growth, real reasons for change and friendship - and all of it told so well, I found it hard to put down.

Darcy's story-telling style is, in many ways, reminiscent of Robin McKinley at her best (think the luminous quality of Sunshine and The Hero and the Crown and the strength of Deerskin,). Since McKinley was long my favourite author, that's among the highest compliments I can give an author. But don't confuse The Eye of the Beholder with McKinley's Beauty; they are very different (but both excellent) takes on the same classic tale.

*I would have given this a full five stars, but a single consistent spelling error and a handful (and I do mean only a handful) of punctuation errors did tweak my inner sub-editor's nose.
I thoroughly enjoyed this rendition of a favorite tale. This was not a Disney version, by any means, (not that I didn't like Disney, I really did love both! ) This gives the inner thoughts of the 2 main characters from first person perspective. Each chapter alternates between the beast and the beauty, giving the reader a more detailed insight to the strengths, flaws and inner turmoil of both characters. If you like this story, I highly recommend it.
I thought the device of alternating the viewpoint between Lysander and Mira was very effective. Initially, I couldn't see what Ciacchella was adding to the already familiar story. But as the story developed, Lysander and Mira became more real and less fairy tale. While Mira appeared to have a more benign and loving past, she and Lysander were both, essentially alone until they found one another. This is a clean, sweet romance that would be acceptable to twelve and up--although twelve would probably see it as a strict retelling of the familiar and most 20s would probably be too sophisticated to see the beauty of the love story. They would be missing something.
Wonderful story, wonderfully told. Beauty and the Beast is my absolute favorite fairy tale, probably because it has the most moral and introspective meat. I've read at least four or five retellings of the story and this one was done wonderfully. I'd say it's tied for # 1 with Juliet Marillier's Heart's Blood.

The characters here are exceptional. They are very real. I really tip my hat to the author for making Beast be a very truly deeply amoral person in the beginning. All too often, such tales follow predictable patterns and the evil guy that turns good does it so quickly that it's hard to credit. Not so here. The growth of the character is depicted excellently, with a wonderful understanding of the psychology of what made him the way he was and what could possible make him change. This is also true of Beauty. She is not the flawless damsel represented elsewhere. Some choices she makes during the story are both awful and very very understandable.

Overall, an excellent book, going beyond Entertainment and into Literature. I will be watching for more works from this talented author.
I love Beauty and the Beast retellings and this was a very old fashion Beauty and the Beast story. This one was a very sweet story but I felt like I had already read it before. There was a little too much of Beauty and the Beast lost in thought repeating the same thoughts to themselves over and over, that made the story a little slow and harder to keep reading. It just needed a little more editing to cut out some of the repetition. I kind of liked the idea of Beauty restoring the castle but I found the details of it slowed the story. I loved the way the Beast's personality changed from completely full of himself to learning how to care about others. I liked that the sorceress came back to converse with the Beast. I liked how Beauty's father had learned a new trade and was beginning to put his life back together. Beauty actually was a beautiful person inside and out.
