This is a mystery based around a young girl Avaline Hall, who finds herself on her own following the sudden death of her mother during the early 1900's. Aveline's life is filled with questions to which she has no answers. Why does she hear bells in her head when she is in danger? Who is the mysterious young man who rescued Avaline from the Triangle fire? Who is her father? After she is rescued from a mental institution by her grandmother, whom she knew nothing about even more questions become evident. Why did her mother chose to live in poverty rather than with her well heeled grandmother? When Aveline is offered the chance to attend an exclusive all girls school she jumps at the chance. The same school previously attended by her mother, she has a chance to solve the mysteries in her life. Aveline finds herself staying at a castle surrounded by a mysterious forest filled with faries, winged men, and all manner of strange creatures. Filled with twists and turns, this magical tale takes the reader on a journey filled with magic, discovery, and numerous interesting characters. It incorporates new creatures and fairy tales with many previously written about in literature resulting in a tale with a fresh and interesting twist. You will want to read the other two books in the series as well in order to complete the tale. Well recommended for any reader who enjoys a tale which mingles magic, mystery, faries, and good versus evil.

Interesting and unique series.
Held my interest till the end. Did not want to put book down

I just can't get enough of Carol Goodman's books .this one was no different - a page turner from beginning to end!

The Blythewood Novels (two so far) are very enjoyable; my fourteen-year-old daughter loves them--the mix of magical realism and romance is fun and engaging. As a mom, I also enjoy the books, though I do roll my eyes at the overly-romantic parts. Still, I like the Hudson Valley setting of the books (it's where I grew up and haven't lived in twenty years) and that the language used is intelligent.

Combining ancient mythology and set in the years around historic events such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the sinking of the RMS Titanic and the events leading up to World War I, the storyline weaves in the faerie realms and an all-female boarding school. This is the second book in the trilogy, continuing an adventure that is both intellectual and yet stretches the imagination.
